Learn traditional skills in short hands-on weekend workshops. These workshops are open to anyone interested in preservation crafts.
BLD 228: Faux Finish Techniques
Students learn methods, tools and techniques for wood graining and marbleizing. Faux finish is a traditional technique used in historic and modern buildings. Students will create grain, texture, stone and brick patterns with water-based paints and glazes, learn basic color theory, practice mixing color, and visit several local sites with faux finishes.
Times: 9:00am-4:00pm
Dates: Sat-Sun, 15-16 Jan.

BLD 135: Blacksmithing I
Students learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing and study the history of techniques and materials used in traditional blacksmithing. They create simple objects using iron, forge, hammer and anvil; light and care for the forge; and learn safe work habits.

Dates: Sat-Sun, 22-23 & 29-30 Jan.
Location: Stella Blacksmith Shop
BLD 233: Plaster Repair
Students learn about the use and properties of plaster and gain skills in analyzing failures and repairing historic plaster walls and ceilings. They will work on plaster walls and ceilings in the Seaport Masonic Lodge, a 1923 Greek revival building on the National Register of Historic Places.
