September 17 - November 19, 2022
Fall Brilliant Minds Series - Geared for Caregivers and 3rd-5th Graders at the National Lighthouse M

BRILLIANT MINDS SERIES
Every morning will include not only history and STEAM explanations, but also at least one hands-on activity. Every week programming runs Saturdays, 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Geared for Parents/Caregivers and Third-Fifth Graders.

September 17 and September 24, 2022
Weather Watchers
Storms! Pounding waves! Keepers deal with many weather-related perils. We will examine what creates these difficult weather conditions, how weather is measured, and how boats and lighthouses contend with it. Projects may include creating a windsock, snowstorm in a jar, and weather logs.

October 1, 2022 - NO PROGRAM
Please join us for Lighthouse Point Fest on Sunday, October 2nd with a pirate school, face painting, and boat design.

October 8 and October 15, 2022
Navigation Naturals
Safely steering a boat around nature’s challenges is no easy task! We will look at how lighthouses aid in navigation in addition to making some of our own navigation tools. Projects may include compass making and creation of a sextant and mapping stars for navigation.

Our October 15th program will also be making an appearance at the Saint George Library Center at 1pm with The Science of Lighting the Night: We will play with light, exploring original lighting methods, Fresnel lenses, and lighthouse automation. Projects may include solar marshmallow roasters, bending light with prisms, and experiments making light flash. This program at the library is free.

October 22, 2022
A keeper’s life could be isolated and hard. Still, there were families including children who lived in these remote places. We will explore their daily lives. Projects may include gardening in harsh terrain, coastal terrain dioramas, keeper’s logs and tending an oil lamp.

October 29, 2022
Haunted Houses – lighthouses that is! We will explore some spooky lighthouse tales from real life while discussing what made this remote, difficult locations, likely to be the site of such stories!

November 5, 2022
Design and Architecture
We will focus on designing lighthouses including why color, height and durability matter. Projects may include building a lighthouse model with a working light and sponge painting of our design ideas.

November 12 and November 19, 2022
Advanced Design and Lightships!
This session builds on previous ideas of lighthouse height and placement to specific hazards of locations both ships and lighthouses face and focuses on problem solving. Projects may include model building or drafting focused on sealing with a specific challenge of weather, geography, or lighting. In the last week we will discuss lightships and build our own model.
