Bus Tour: Explore Historic Johnstown

November 2, 2024

Johnstown is so much more than the horrific flood of 1889 that nearly destroyed the city and that, for many, defines its history. Located, like Pittsburgh, at the confluence of two rivers (Little Conemaugh and Stonycreek), Johnstown also shares with its larger neighbor to the west a legacy of industry, immigration, resilience, fine architecture, and swoon-inducing views.

Our program will start with an in-depth tour of the Johnstown Flood Museum, followed by a walking tour of architectural highlights of the Downtown Johnstown Historic District. After lunch on your own, we will ride up the hill (by the Incline, if long-stalled restoration is completed; by bus, if not) to observe the spectacular landscape that has been both an asset for the City and the cause of multiple floods.

From there, we will visit the National Historic District of Westmont, a suburb developed by the Cambria Iron Company after the 1889 Flood.
Note:  We will provide snacks and refreshments during the tour. Lunch is self-pay and not included in the tour price.
Tour meeting point: Station Square, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Instructions for parking and meeting the bus will be provided to registrants in advance of the tour. The bus will depart at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
Tour ending point: Station Square, by 4:30 p.m.
