PreservationDirectory.com: The Hub of Heritage Conservation

PreservationDirectory.com is the premier online resource and research center for historic preservation, heritage tourism, and cultural resource management (CRM) in the United States and Canada. Since our inception, we have been the central bridge connecting professionals, historic homeowners, and advocates with the tools and networks required to safeguard our architectural and cultural heritage.

Our Comprehensive Resources & Services

As a comprehensive clearinghouse for the preservation community, we offer a specialized suite of services designed to streamline building stewardship, advocacy, and professional development:

  • Preservation Job Board & Events: Organizations can list upcoming conferences, post preservation job openings, and recruit specialized talent. Our job board is the industry’s primary source for career opportunities in heritage conservation.
  • The Preservation Library: A curated digital repository of historic preservation legislation, Section 106 policy documents, and the complete set of NPS Preservation Briefs for technical research.
  • Historic Real Estate & Heritage Travel: Browse a nationwide marketplace of historic properties for sale, or explore our curated guides to historic hotels, heritage inns, and architectural tours.
  • Heritage Trades & Professional Directory: Connect with historic restoration contractors, traditional building trades, and consultants specialized in architectural conservation.
  • Funding & Educational Programs: Identify preservation funding sources, including historic tax credits, restoration grants, and loans. We also host the most extensive directory of university preservation programs for undergraduate and graduate studies.
  • Organizational Networking: We facilitate connections between government agencies, historical societies, Main Street programs, museums, and arts and culture festivals.

Meet Our Founder: Tim Cannan

Tim Cannan, the founder of PreservationDirectory.com, has spent over two decades building digital infrastructure for the preservation movement. Currently based in Pittsford, New York (and formerly of Portland, Oregon), Tim’s expertise is rooted in both local advocacy and federal policy.

Tim’s career began at Syracuse University, where he interned with the Preservation Association of Central New York (PACNY). He later served with the National Park Service (NPS) at the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. in the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, contributing to the National Heritage Areas program.

These dual experiences—grassroots non-profit work and federal-level resource management—inspired the creation of PreservationDirectory.com. Today, the platform serves as an easy-to-use, comprehensive authority that empowers everyone, from the first-time historic homeowner to the veteran CRM professional, to protect the places that define our history.

"Preservationists help us understand who we are—that without a past we have no grounding in terms of the decisions that we make now and in the future."

Dr. Michael Tomlan (Preservation Educator)
