The Churches and Homes of Albina’s Volga Germans Tour

Contributed by: Architectural Heritage Center

Location: Portland, Oregon

Portland has been shaped by the arrival of many immigrant groups. One of the lesser-known groups is the Volga Germans, who began to settle in the newly platted Albina Township in the early 1880s. Here, they cleared forested land and built wooden churches and homes in a variety of architectural styles representative of the era. Join Volga German historian Steve Schreiber and Professor of Architecture Tom Hubka as they guide you on a 2-mile walking tour highlighting some of the remaining churches and homes that tell the story of this ethnic group.
