The French Cable Station Museum is the most complete, authentic undersea telegraph station in the world. Built in 1891, the station operated until Thanksgiving Day 1959. (It was closed by the US Government for the duration of WWII when Germany occupied France.)
Established in 1972 by a small group of Orleans residents, the museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and preserved to appear as it would have while still in operation. Some of the people who will guide your tour are descendants of personnel who worked as operators in the station. We especially encourage schools and other special groups to visit and invite young people to intern assisting with preserving and promoting the museum.
Admission is free! Donations are appreciated to help with ongoing museum maintenance and preservation. Guided tours are available from June through September. Specially arranged tours can be provided year round.
The museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
