Property Description
This circa 1905 historic home with Victorian overtones is nestled on a ¾ acre parcel that stretches from S. Dogwood Street all the way through to Coleman Street. In the late 1980's, collaboration between a structural engineer and an interior decorator returned the home to its original beauty, with devotion to periodic authenticity, but incorporating such niceties as modern plumbing and wiring. Then in 2010, careful attention was paid to the century-old foundation by undertaking structural replacement and reinforcement where necessary or where deemed prudent. The painstaking maintenance that has been the home’s hallmark, right down to the ongoing contract for exterminator services plus periodic yard care, continues to this day with striking results.

This property has been beautifully landscaped, incorporating palm trees of several distinct types, azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, Japanese maple, gardenia and magnolia trees, fig and pecan trees, not to mention Savannah holly, oak and crepe myrtle trees all protected by a eight foot high wooden fence. The yard can be accessed from S. Dogwood Street through two walk gates and a drive-through gate and from Coleman Street, via a second paved driveway, leading to the rear drive-through gate. The rear of the property is framed by magnificent virgin pines that provide a bountiful supply of pine straw wherever called for in the yard. In addition, there is a hot tub, four sheds in the yard along the southern fence, two of them with electricity, which provide everything from storage to workshops.

The home itself incorporates eleven-foot ceilings throughout, five inch diamond glazed heart pine floors in much of the building, dental moldings and many other examples of exquisite woodworking. The wide front porch wraps partially around the north side of the house and provides egress to the home through double doors, into a comfortable foyer with its antique chandelier. To the right is the living room graced by built in bookcases and a fireplace with propane log and hand-made draperies. To the right of the fireplace is the entrance to the large formal dining room with its magnificent antique chandelier and more hand-made drapery. Next is entered the large eat in/live in country kitchen with excellent storage, all appliances and access to the spacious rear deck. Returning to the foyer through the central hallway lined with incredible storage closets (and pull down attic stairs) also gives access to the spacious full bath and the rear bedroom with its French doorway that also lead to the rear deck looking out over the back yard. The central hallway also gives access to the front bedroom, incorporating its own half bath, more handmade drapery and one of the many ceiling fans to be found throughout the building. Two sections of the original wrap-around porch on the northern side of the home have been enclosed: a Florida room and an extra room, one with a private entrance that could be used as an office and one that could be used as a study or third bedroom. The original windows in the house have storm windows while the newer windows are thermal pane and swing down for easy cleaning.

In summary, this property has been lovingly restored, remodeled and maintained, and displays craftsmanship and materials not seen in modern construction. It and must be seen in order to appreciate this fine example of turn of the prior century elegance. The home is surrounded by good neighbors, is only 200 yards from picturesque historic downtown Ridgeway, SC while I-77, just two miles away, provides easy access to Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC and all of the cultural, dining and entertainment opportunities they provide. 39032-09350
