Property History
Henry Taylor and his family settled in the Mill Creek Valley in the 1700’s. They were farmers who grew many crops; but, they became wealthy from the growing of tobacco and the selling of cigars and other tobacco products. Henry owned factories and tobacco drying barns in the vicinity of this house.

In 1883 Jacob Taylor, a grandson of Henry, took a part of the Taylor farm and divided it into fifteen building lots for the use of his workers in the Taylor cigar shops. This was the beginning of the settlement of Snydertown, which was later renamed Yoe.

Besides making and selling cigars, the Taylors found time to establish the Taylor School House, Yoe’s first school, in 1871. The school was one block from the Taylor House at the corner of Main Street and George Street. It also doubled as a Sunday School for the Salem United Methodist Church.

The cigar industry grew and by 1907 there were 50 factories in Yoe. Approximately 100,000 cigars were made daily. The Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad had a station one block away on West Pennsylvania Avenue and picked up the Taylor products and shipped them throughout the country.

Benjamin Seaton Taylor, a descendant of Henry’s continued in the family tobacco business. In 1896, Benjamin built his home, which is the only original Taylor structure still standing in Yoe. Because Benjamin was wealthy, he spared no expense to make his house one of the finest in York County. Its elegance and craftmanship are unmatched today. He obtained the finest brick, slate, copper, and other materials. The inside contains twenty-six lead, stained and curved glass windows and doors, natural hardwood floors, ten-foot ceilings, pocket doors, intricate plaster moldings, four walk-in and three cedar closets, and many other features you would expect in a gorgeous Victorian brick home built by a Tobacco Baron.

 
Property Description
The Benjamin Seaton Taylor House is a unique jewel that has been lovingly maintained by its current owner in as close to original condition as possible. The level of craftmanship found in this Victorian Mansion is unparalleled in modern times - it was built with only the best materials money could buy. The home has 10’ ceilings on both the first and second floor; natural hard-wood floors and an original tile floor in the entrance way; a port hole window; intricate plaster moldings; lattice work; four walk-in and three cedar closets; twenty-six lead, stained, and curved glass windows; pocket doors, friezes and pillars; and a double Lazy Susan by the kitchen sink. The Outbuilding (the only surviving example of five original tobacco drying sheds) is currently leased to an electrician and generates enough income to more than cover the insurance and property tax expenses for the year. This building adds another 3389 square feet of usable space to the property, 1034 of these square feet are finished. When you take the finished square feet from the Outbuilding into account, the true price per square foot of the entire property drops to $66.31 – quite a bargain. Finally, there is a two-car garage in the Outbuilding as well as ample non-garage parking on the property.

Priced well below its appraised value of $405,000 (09/07/2016), this one-of-a-kind property is an exceptional value with endless possibilities. The seller has also purchased a home warranty, which will convey to the buyer.
