Property Description

Who knew that one of the finest architectural gems of the South rests quietly in the small community of Marion, SC?
The best house is the one built sparing no expense. This home is one of the most unusual examples of a Craftsman Bungalow I have ever seen. Gorgeous elaborate woodwork. Leaded windows of stained and slag glass. Curved windows, transoms, and beveled glass windows. A massive round leaded glass skylight in the center of the house topping the round "Poker Room." The original owner was Joe Wheeler of Detroit. He made his fortune in silver mining and timber. And this house in Marion was built in 1907 when he was timbering Cat Island near Georgetown, SC. He and his wealthy friends from up north, supposedly spent many a night playing poker with professional athletes from the Detroit Lions and the Boston Red Sox. I can just imagine the parties these guys had before Joe lost it all in the Great Depression. Since then the house has been lovingly restored and modernized by a second family who aimed for perfection. After two decades, they are readying this bungalow for its next chapter! You could author Chapter 3! You have a head start with elaborate landscaping, original bath fixtures, a kitchen with a Butler's Pantry to die for, original built-ins, soaring ceilings and handmade tulip light fixtures. What appears to be leather-wrapped walls in the dining room are actually painted, pressed cardboard. You have to see these! The coffered ceilings steal the show in the formal area and the original doors, hardware, mantles, and Delft and Majolica tiles are still intact! Rewired. Replumbed. And the converted Carriage House is perfect for a home office or guests...or party central! And if you want a garage, it was built in a manner that would make it easy to convert to a garage. Plus the attic is ready to convert to living space, too! The pictures say it all!

If you are looking to settle in a small southern community, Marion is worth looking into. Situated just 1 hour from the Grand Strand and 2 hours from Charleston, this historic little enclave is a wonderful place to raise a family. It’s an even better place to retire! Why? Because the community is small enough to be friendly and big enough to offer the shopping and dining you crave. From this home at 408 S. Main, you can walk to dinner or the grocery store. Wide tree-lined streets, historic homes, and old churches surround you. There is a special pride in this community that is...well...just is! Come see for yourself.
