Coalition Files for Injunction to Halt Censorship at National Parks
A coalition of scientists, historians, and advocates have filed for a preliminary injunction to halt and reverse censorship at National Parks across the country. The lawsuit was launched last month as the Trump administration carries out the 'Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History' Executive Orderwhich has resulted in the removal, altering, or censorship of materials and exhibits across National Parks. This has included exhibits or signs on slavery, LGBTQ+ history, indigenous history, climate change, and more.
The case, National Parks Conservation Association et. al. v. Department of the Interior, et. al. is led by the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), additional plaintiffs include the Association of National Park Rangers, the Coalition to Protect America's National Parks, the American Association of State and Local History, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Society of Experimental Graphic Design.
The NPCA argues that the actions from the administration violate the values and mission of the National Park Service. The injunction asks the court to halt the removal and altering of materials and restore exhibits that were already removed, while the underlying lawsuit proceeds.
Preservation Action recently joined the NPCA and others for an official kickoff event on Capitol Hill for the recently established National Parks Cultural Resource Coalition, which is working to defend against efforts to censor our history.
Stay tuned and learn more about these important efforts.
