Akaka Amendment on Tomb of the Unknowns Study Proposed in Senate
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Tombs of the Unknown, Arlington National Cemetery, National Trust for Historic Preservation

Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI) proposed an amendment (SA 2995) to the Defense Authorization Bill (HR 1585) on September 20th calling for the Secretaries of the Army and Veterans Affairs to produce (no later than 180 days after enactment of the bill) a report to study the options for either replacing or repairing the Tombs of the Unknown in Arlington National Cemetery.  The report will include a description of the current efforts of the Secretaries to maintain and preserve the Tomb of the Unknowns and an explanation of why no attempt has been made since 1989 to repair the monument.  In addition, the report will require a comprehensive estimate of the cost of replacement of the monument versus the cost of repairing it, as well as an assessment of its structural integrity.

The Senate is expected to complete voting on all amendments on September 28th — including the Akaka amendment — with a vote on final passage of the Defense authorization bill scheduled for October 1st.

The National Trust is spearheading a campaign to save the Tomb of the Unknowns from being replaced.  For further information please visit http://www.nationaltrust.org/advocacy/arlington.html.
