The Elisabeth Potter Historic Preservation Advocacy and Education Awards are given eachyear by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The awards are named inhonor of Elisabeth Walton Potter, who as historian for the Oregon Parks and RecreationDepartment in 1966 was the first staff member of the federally-mandated statewide programin historic preservation. Mrs. Potter retired in 1998 as long-time program coordinatorresponsible for nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.

Available award funds are to be distributed among recipients for the express purpose ofhelping them cover travel expenses to a historic preservation-related conference orworkshop chosen by the award winner and approved by the SHPO. Eligible travel expensesinclude transportation (e.g., air fare/airport shuttle, personal vehicle mileage), lodging, meals, and conference registration fees.

The SHPO encourages applications from every region of Oregon. Awards are competitiveand will be based on information provided in the application. A clear and compellingstatement regarding an important historic preservation advocacy or education need in theapplicant’s local community will carry the most weight in selecting award recipients. Afterattending the conference, award recipients will be expected to provide the SHPO with awritten report about their learning experiences and ways they intend to apply what waslearned to historic preservation advocacy or education efforts in their community.

Deadline for submission of applications is 5 p.m. on May 31, 2011. Award winners shouldbe announced by mid-June. Mail signed and completed application form to David Bogan,SHPO/Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, 725 Summer Street NE, Suite C, Salem,OR 97301.
