Plasmatic Concepts is proud to announce the release of the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences iPad App. This app explores Richard Neutra’s Mid-Century Modernist masterpiece located in Los Angeles. My co-author David Hartwell and I have been living in VDL's 1939 Garden House since 2007 (a benefit of my having been appointed director of VDL by the College of Environmental Design at Cal Poly Pomona who is responsible for the property.) This unique position enables us to share with the public our knowledge of this seminal structure from the inside out.
There are many reasons we chose to highlight this particular Neutra project: it was Neutra’s own family residence and workplace; it was built in three phases offering insight into the evolution of Neutra’s architectural ideas; and it is today the only Neutra residence regularly open to the public.
The Neutra VDL iPad app includes never seen before photography of the house along with photographs of famed architectural photographer Julius Shulman, courtesy of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A biography of Richard Neutra, an interactive historical timeline, rotating 3D models, plans and sections, and information about the design intent, construction techniques, and materials used are some of the features that make this 260 page app (130 pages, 2 orientations) a must have for anyone passionate about this fascinating period in architecture.
The app is available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/neutra-vdl-studio-residences/id468279435?ls=1&mt=8
