New York City Council Approves Borough Hall Skyscraper District
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com -
Contributed By: Historic Districts Council
Website: http://www.hdc.org

Despite fierce lobbying from the real estate industry and a local coop board, the City Council Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses voted today in favor of the designation of the Borough Hall Skyscraper District, NYC’s 105th historic district and the 27th in Brooklyn.  HDC would like to thank everyone  - from neighbors and residents to far-flung colleagues - who helped support this district; your voices made a genuine difference. We also want to extend a special thank you to Councilmember Stephen Levin and his staff for their incredible support and hard work on this contentious issue. Without his strong advocacy, this designation would not have happened.

The Subcommittee also approved the Grand Concourse Historic District in The Bronx.  The Concourse is the 11th historic district in New York’s northernmost borough and has long been a priority for both Bronx boosters and the preservation community. HDC is thrilled that the Landmarks Commission has taken this first step in protecting this most remarkable stretch of New York and we look forward to seeing more of the Concourse considered in the hopefully not-too-distant future.
