Historic Wilmington Foundation celebrates National Preservation Month annually each May, alongside thousands of preservation organizations across America. The theme this year is “Discovering America's Hidden Gems”. The Foundation’s Preservation Awards recognize and honor the businesses and individuals who make preservation a reality in our historic region. We are now accepting nominations for current preservation excellence and leadership. Your nominations will help recognize, celebrate and educate the residents of the region about historic preservation. Our 2011 Preservation Award winners were individuals, institutions, and governments supporting the preservation of our region’s heritage. Some examples were a documentary film on Rosenwald Schools of Pender County produced by Claudia Stack, the Brooklyn Arts Center at St. Andrews for its creative rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of a former church, and Brunswick County Government for its leadership and funding for its first comprehensive historic resources survey.

The Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) will also release its annual Most Threatened Historic Places List in May. Since 2006, Historic Wilmington Foundation has focused attention on irreplaceable historic resources through public education and an awareness campaign designed to preserve the most threatened historic places. The first six years have witnessed successes and setbacks with historic sites. Some of the nominations added last year were the majestic tree canopy that shades Market Street., the former Topsail High School in Pender County, and the region’s historic wooden windows which are threatened due to often unnecessary and excessive replacement by owners of historic properties. The north end of Wilmington Central Business District was removed from the list last year when the city passed a preservation ordinance that will provide protection and incentives for historic buildings downtown. The passage of the ordinance was supported by Historic Wilmington Foundation and Wilmington Downtown, Inc.

Both nomination processes, which are open to the public, encourage the recognition of preservation excellence as well as threats to the region’s historic and architectural legacy. Nominations are invited from Wilmington and New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties. Please be aware that the deadline for Most Threatened Historic Places submissions is March 31, and the Preservation Awards submission deadline is April 5. Both the Most Threatened Historic Places list and the Preservation Awards will be announced in May, which is National Preservation Month.

Details on previous lists are on our website www.historicwilmington.org, as well as nomination forms for both categories. Contact the Foundation at (910) 762-2511 or visit our website for more information.
