Sixteen of the entries were prepared by individual members of the HALS Northern California Chapter (http://halsca.org) documenting the landscapes of 16 different California Missions. The other 4 entries came from Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, and Wisconsin.
Sponsored by HALS, cash prizes will again be awarded to the top three submissions. Results will be announced at the Phoenix September 2012 ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo during the HALS Meeting. To compete, short format histories had to be submitted to HALS at the National Park Service no later than July 31, 2012.
This is the third annual HALS Challenge competition. The 1st annual HALS Challenge in 2010, Revisiting Cultural Landscapes of Childhood, inspired 7 short form historical report entries. The 2011HALS Challenge: Celebrating Cultural Landscapes of Diversity generated 11 entries.
