Historic Wilmington Foundation celebrates National Preservation Month annually each May, alongside thousands of preservation organizations across America. The Foundation’s Preservation Awards recognize and honor the businesses and individuals who make preservation a reality in our historic region. We are now accepting nominations for current preservation excellence and leadership. Your nominations will help recognize, celebrate and educate the residents of the Lower Cape Fear about historic preservation. Our 2012 Preservation Award winners were individuals, institutions, government and businesses supporting the preservation of our region’s heritage. Some examples were St James Episcopal Church and the Temple of Israel for their outstanding restorations of facilities and the City of Wilmington and the Historic Preservation Commission for 50 years of preservation leadership.
The Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) will also release its annual Most Threatened Historic Places List in May. Since 2006, Historic Wilmington Foundation has focused attention on irreplaceable historic resources through public education and an awareness campaign designed to preserve the most threatened historic places. The first seven years have witnessed successes and setbacks with historic sites. Some of last year's nominations included 226 South Front Street and the Burgaw jail, as well as the former Topsail High School. Last year we also highlighted historic wooden windows again which are threatened due to often unnecessary and excessive replacement by owners of historic properties.
Both nomination processes, which are open to the public, encourage the recognition of preservation excellence as well as threats to the region’s historic and architectural legacy. Nominations are invited from Wilmington and New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties.
Please be aware that the deadline for Most Threatened Historic Places submissions and the Preservation Awards nominations will be April 10th. Both the Most Threatened Historic Places list and the Preservation Awards will be announced in May, which is National Preservation Month.
Details on previous lists are on our website www.historicwilmington.org, as well as nomination forms for both categories. Contact the Foundation at (910) 762-2511 or visit our website for more information.
