Call for Portfolios: Van Alen Institute's Ground/Work Competition

We’re pleased to announce the launch of Ground/Work: A Design Competition for Van Alen Institute’s New Street-Level Space, an international architecture competition seeking innovative designs for a new street-level venue to house Van Alen’s work space and public programs.

Next year, the Institute celebrates its 120th anniversary, marking a rich legacy of dialogue, research, and advocacy in service of innovative architecture and design. With your support and participation, in over 30 years at our sixth-floor space at 30 West 22nd Street in Manhattan, we’ve hosted exhibitions, performances, and debates that have explored the future of cities and public spaces, creating a vibrant community of designers, urban thinkers, scholars, and the broader public.

With the launch of Van Alen Books in 2011, we catalyzed a new street-level presence for the Institute, opening our programs to a wider audience and more directly engaging the civic realm. Now, as the Institute refocuses its attention to analyze, advise on, and activate designs, public policies, and experiences of the public realm, Ground/Work seeks architectural designs that will consolidate all of our activities in a new, more accessible home for the Institute on the ground floor of our Flatiron District building.

Ground/Work invites designers up to 10 years out of school to create a visionary design for our new space that is more visible, accessible, and participatory in public life, with a clear connection to the street and the city at large.

We’re seeking portfolio submissions through June 13, 2013. Up to three individual designers or firms will be selected as finalists for the second stage of the competition, receiving a stipend to develop their design proposals over a three-week period. Finalists will reveal their designs on September 4, 2013, and the winner will be announced on September 12, 2013, after which the team will have four months to complete design work. Construction is expected to begin in winter 2013.

Visit the competition website at www.vanalen.org/groundwork to register and submit your portfolio. Those who register before June 1, 2013 will receive a complimentary VAI membership, joining our diverse network of members and supporters.

We want to thank everyone who has made Van Alen such a vibrant destination over the last three decades, and invite you to join us at this important moment for the organization. We hope you are as excited as we are to envision a new home for the Institute, and look forward to your continued support as we embark on this transformative new chapter for Van Alen.

Ground/Work is produced by Van Alen in collaboration with Kind Aesthetic, a New York–based arts consultancy.
