Washington, D.C. – The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announced today that the organization will be donating $9,400 to The American College of the Building Arts for the creation of the DAR Special Collection, part of the
College’s Byrne-Diderot Library. The Byrne-Diderot Library is comprised of over 6,000 volumes relating to the traditional building arts, including some works dating to the American Revolution.
Funding for this project was made possible through the sponsorship of The Fort Sullivan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, located in Charleston, SC.
The American College of Building Arts (ACBA), named as a 2012 recipient of the “Heroes of the New South” award by Southern Living, is the only four-year liberal arts college in America educating and training artisans in the traditional building arts, fostering exceptional craftsmanship and encouraging the preservation, enrichment and understanding of the world’s architectural heritage. The funds provided will be used to create the Daughters of the American Revolution Special Collections Room of rare books and historical tools relating to the building trades.
Colby M. Broadwater, III, president of the College said, “We are thrilled to receive this generous gift from the DAR. Our application was one of many and we deeply appreciate the DAR’s commitment to the teaching of the traditional building trades. We are fortunate that they have chosen to assist us in preserving these rare and historical books, periodicals and materials so integral to the instruction in the classic building arts. Not only do our students benefit from this collection, but it is open to the public for their use as well. ”
The DAR grants program was started in 2010. Funding is awarded to support projects in local communities that promote the organization’s mission areas of historic preservation, education and patriotism.
The DAR receives hundreds of grants applications each year, making competition for the funding through the non-profit organization high. Interested groups must be sponsored by a local DAR chapter, submit a copy of their 501(c)(3) IRS documentation, and include a narrative that describes the need and urgency of the project as well as planned activities and benefits to the community which will result from the grant.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
