(Rochester, NY, January 27, 2014) - Three recently awarded grants will support efforts to nominate four areas in Rochester’s 19th Ward for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The designation would mean qualified homeowners would be eligible for the New York State Historic Homeowner Tax Credits when making a range of home repairs that meet specific criteria.

The grants include an $18,000 historical preservation grant from Rochester Area Community Foundation to the 19th Ward Community Association as well as $10,000 from The Preservation League of New York State and $5,000 from the National Trust For Historic Preservation awarded to The Landmark Society of Western New York. All grants will support the costs of preparing several State and National Register of Historic Places nominations for areas in the 19th Ward.

“We are grateful for all the assistance offered from these organizations to support our work in the 19th Ward,” said LaShay Harris, 19th Ward Community Association President. “Historic district designations throughout the neighborhood will strengthen the entire community.”

More than 22,000 residents live in the 19th Ward, the largest residential community in the city and among the most diverse. “The 19th Ward is not only a vibrant neighborhood, but one that includes important historic architecture,” said Wayne Goodman, Executive Director, Landmark Society. “We are honored to support their preservation initiatives.”
