Applications Open for the 2014 SAH/Mellon Author Awards
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - sah, mellon, architecture, history, publication, awards

The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) is accepting applications for the 2014 SAH/Mellon Author Awards. The awards provide financial assistance to scholars to help defray the high costs of image licensing and reproduction and the creation of original drawings and maps for monographs on the history of the built environment. The deadline for the 2014 SAH/Mellon Author Awards is June 1, 2014. Application instructions are online at sah.org/sah-mellon-author-awards.

SAH Executive Director Pauline Saliga commented, “We at SAH are very grateful to the Mellon Foundation for providing funds for this important publishing subvention. Authors who are publishing their first monograph on the history of
architecture, landscape architecture or urbanism often need financial assistance with the high cost of securing the rights to images and creating new maps, plans and graphics. The Mellon Foundation is providing important financial assistance to scholars in need.”

Awards are made for print (hardcover, soft cover) and digital publications (eBook, DVD). Awardees are selected on the basis of the quality and demonstrated financial need for their project. The typical grant amount ranges between $5,000–$6,000 and is made directly to the author. Applications are judged within the following parameters:
  • Support will be for scholars who are publishing their first monograph
  • Funds are for reimbursement of anticipated expenses for rights and
    reproductions
  • Books must be under contract with a publisher
Additional criteria for making awards include: contribution or importance to the field; significance and clarity of argument in submitted abstract and text sample; effective use of illustrations; depth of research and completeness of
bibliography; and clarity of writing.

The SAH/Mellon Author Awards are made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SAH awards more than 40 fellowships and grants each year. For information on other fellowship and grant opportunities, visit sah.org/fellowships-and-grants.
