Advocacy Alert! Help Save Paul Kirk House - A Modern Masterpiece
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com -

Docomomo WEWA is helping to get the word out about an opportunity to bid at auction on January 23, 2015, on a Paul Hayden Kirk-designed house in the Lake Heights neighborhood in Bellevue.

The house, built in 1955, is located at 4749 119th Avenue SE, Bellevue, WA 98006. The 1,843 sf residence sits on a one acre lot. This architectural gem is significant to Bellevue's development and history and is an excellent example of mid-century modern residential design in the Northwest.

The owner had restored the house, maintaining its original integrity while making improvements and upgrades for contemporary living. Unfortunately, the owner died intestate in 2009. The property has been in probate and the condition has deteriorated. We are told that the house can be restored again.

Preservation efforts are underway by a grassroots neighborhood preservation group called the Friends of the Kirk House, which currently has over 100 charter members who are committed to saving the house from demolition. They have galvanized around this preservation effort due to the concern that the highest bidder at auction may demolish the house and subdivide the one acre parcel.

The Friends are exploring ways to preserve the site and house. One way is to have an "angel" buyer at the auction who will then donate the property to the Friends. The Friends are in communication with the City of Bellevue about establishing a park and community use for the site and house but the City has not committed at this point. Contact Robin Bentley, Friends of the Kirk House, at birdnest425@comcast.net if you wish to get involved with advocacy efforts or be their "angel" buyer.

Another way to save the house and site is if the winning bid/buyer is someone who is preservation-friendly with access to cash and resources to take on a preservation project.

If you or someone you know has the resources to save the property, please bid at the auction! Auction Details (see attached pdf for complete information):

Time:  10:00 am
Date:  Friday, January 23, 2015
Place:  Fourth Avenue entrance, King County Administration Building, 500 Fourth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104

We also refer you to 360modern's blog post about the house.

Thank you! Please forward this message to others who may be interested.
