Crown Motel Sign Receives Reprieve
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Atomic Age Alliance, Crown Motel sign, Portland Oregon, endangered history

Recently, a deal was struck between Atomic Age Alliance – Portland, Reach CDC and Ramsey Signs, offering at least a year-long reprieve to the aging Crown Motel sign, a neon symbol of America’s 1950s highway boom and an icon of Portland’s Interstate Blvd. The Crown Motel sign will be removed by Ramsey Signs (restorers of the Hollywood Theater sign) on Monday, March 17th.

Ramsey will store the sign for a period of 12 months, during which time a new site will be found and the atomic-era sign will be restored.

Restoration costs are estimated to run between $35,000–$45,000. After a site is determined, the Atomic Age Alliance will start fund-raising and working with sponsors to meet these costs.  Interstate Blvd property owners who feel their site is right for the sign, and those who would like to sponsor the restoration of the sign or help with future fund-raising, please contact us at crownmotel@aaapdx.org or www.aaapdx.org.
