The Lee Nelson Book Award - RECOGNIZING BOOKS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE FIELD OF PRESERVATION TECHNOLOGY

Call for Nominations for the 2015 Award

The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) established the Lee Nelson Book Award to recognize outstanding and influential publications in the field of preservation technology. It is conferred every three years, and the last award was presented in 2012. A complimentary registration for the conference at which the award is presented is part of the award. The recipient receives a framed certificate at the APT conference. The award-winning publication is reviewed or excerpted in APT's peer-reviewed journal, the APT Bulletin, if it has not already been reviewed.

APT was created in 1968 as a not-for-profit educational corporation to promote research, training and the dissemination of information relating to preservation technology. Members include architects, conservators, engineers, historians, landscape architects, contractors, artisans, technicians, curators and others involved in the conservation of historic buildings, sites and artifacts.

What publications are eligible for the Lee Nelson Book Award?

The jury will consider book-length authored works published in English or French, or available in English translation, which expand the knowledge base for heritage preservation practice. Eligible works are those which explore the history and development of technology and materials used in historic buildings, sites, landscapes and artifacts, or which explore the application of technology to their maintenance, conservation and protection.

Works published during the 2012, 2013 and 2014 calendar years are eligible for the 2015 award.

Publications will be evaluated against the following criteria:
*     contribution to expanding scholarship in, and influence on, the broad field of preservation technology

*     quality and originality of research, or application of knowledge
*     quality of documentation and referencing (bibliographies, footnotes,                 glossaries and indexing)
*     transferability to preservation practice or projects
*     clarity and readability of style and content
*     quality and value of drawings and illustrations.

Nominations:

Nominations will be accepted until June 1, 2015 from the publisher, the author, anyone associated with the work, or from enthusiastic readers.

Nominations must be received in the form of a letter or an electronic message and must include the following:
*     name of publication and number of pages
*     name(s) of author(s)
*     name and address of publisher
*     nominator's name, address and telephone number
*     a minimum of five (5) copies of the nominated work for review purposes must also be submitted, postmarked no later than June 1, 2015.

Please send nomination materials to the following address:

Awards Jury:

The Awards Jury is multidisciplinary and international, with one member appointed from APT's College of Fellows and four additional members appointed by the APT President for each award period. The APT's Publications Committee co-chairs and the editor of the APT Bulletin are standing members. All jury members volunteer their time and expertise.

In Memory of Lee Nelson:

Lee Nelson was one of the founders of the Association for Preservation Technology in 1968, and was the American Editor of the APT Bulletin for its first 10 years. He served with distinction for 32 years in the US National Park Service, taking a leadership role in the development of new technical information about historic preservation and pioneering such influential publications as the Preservation Briefs, Preservation Tech Notes and Preservation Case Studies.

In addition to his remarkable work as a preservationist, Lee is remembered for his integrity and professionalism, as well as for his modesty and sense of humor. This award recognizing influential publications in the field of preservation technology is APT's tribute to an outstanding preservationist, colleague and friend.

For additional information, please contact APT Publications Committee Co-chairs Kitty Vieth (telephone 415-421-1680, email kitty@argsf.com) or Dean Koga (telephone 212-777-1300, ext 24 or email dkoga@bcausa.com).
