Class in Historic Preservation at Portland State University - Historic Preservation for Planners
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Historic Preservation, education, college course, Portland State University

Planning and preservation seem to have inherent conflicts. Not every building can be saved, and society has varied opinions about what to do with historic structures. Economic feasibility, placing the burden of preservation, and maintaining the historic fabric of the built environment are often policy choices. Preservation practice at its best promotes economic development, and is sensitive to the issues of gentrification, equity, and environmental sustainability. This seminar style class will consider how to integrate historic preservation with planning; class readings are supplemented with guest lectures and local walking tours. Class times will include field trips to The White Stage Building, NW 23rd Street, King's Hill Historic District, Bosco-Milliagan's Architectural Heritage Center and Portland Development Commission. Each student will create and present a preservation plan based on a community of their choice.
