The Nantucket Preservation Trust (NPT) seeks a dynamic, imaginative, and accomplished leader to serve as its next Executive Director. The Executive Director will work with the NPT Board of Directors and staff to provide strategic vision, direction, development, and administrative leadership for Nantucket Island’s leading nonprofit organization for historic preservation. NPT’s stated mission is to
“promote the island’s National Historic Landmark status and the unique and
diverse architectural and cultural heritage through the preservation of
historic architecture, interiors, and streetscapes.”
Organization: NPT was founded in 1997 and is now supported by more than 400 members. With an annual operating budget of approximately $500,000, NPT’s core programs include: historic house markers, house histories, neighborhood books, preservation easements, an annual preservation symposium, promotion of traditional building methods, and scholarships for local artisans and students pursuing a career in the building trades. NPT’s special projects and major initiatives over the past few years have included documentation studies, such as an interior survey of over 800 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and an update for the island’s National Historic Landmark listing. NPT is governed by a 23-member Board of Directors.
Position Description: Under general oversight from the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the professional management of the NPT and fostering the organization’s role as Nantucket’s leading advocate for historic preservation.
The Executive Director will move the organization forward in the continued development and implementation of goals that reflect NPT’s mission and business plan. The Executive Director provides overall leadership for strategic plan implementation, organizational development, financial oversight and operations, fundraising, events and volunteer management, advocacy, educational programs, and marketing and communications. As the public face of the organization, the Executive Director serves as spokesperson and preservation expert.
· Works closely with the NPT Executive Committee to recruit, train and maintain a strong, balanced Board of Directors and committees.
· Cultivates the Board of Directors’ engagement in critical thinking, strategic planning, resource/financial development, membership development and financial support.
· Serves as the primary contact person for the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
· Ensures that NPT is fiscally sound and establishes rigorous accountability standards for grants and budget tracking.
· Directs financial activities and makes decisions based on plans and policies developed in concert with the Board of Directors. Oversees all bookkeeping, accounting, and financial activities.
· Secures contributions, contracts, grants, and in-kind donations to support NPT projects and services.
· Presents annual budget, and quarterly financial reports to Board of Directors.
· Engages with Treasurer and Board of Directors in financial planning, investment strategy, accounting, banking and an annual audit.
Program Planning, Operations/Administration
· In concert with the Board of Directors, sets priorities and gains consensus for program goals and objectives and implements programming accordingly.
· Supervises three full-time staff members; the Director of Development, Director of Media and Communications, and the Administrative Assistant, and oversees NPT's team of consultants. Ensures accuracy of financial transactions and membership database.
· Recruits, manages, empowers, and provides inspirational leadership of a creative and passionate staff that fosters common organizational vision.
· Anticipates organizational growth and recommends and budgets for appropriate staffing.
· Maintains operations- and human-resources policies and procedures.
Fundraising, Membership Development, and Volunteer Management
· Sustains and strengthens a diverse funding base, including corporate, foundation, and individual giving with emphasis on implementing NPT's development campaign and increasing NPT’s membership- and individual-donor base.
· Raises the visibility of the organization through the continued development and implementation of signature events geared to NPT’s various constituencies.
· Implements creative strategies and advocacy to increase membership and expand public awareness of the NPT’s work and value to the Nantucket community.
· Cultivates and stewards donors with board members through outreach, meetings, dinners, and events.
· Oversees the recruiting, training, and supervising of volunteers to serve on committees and to execute events, such as NPT’s annual August Fête.
· Develops and implements educational and membership programs, such as the Summer Lecture and Luncheon.
Public Policy and Advocacy
· Positions the NPT as an effective, vital, historic preservation organization. Represents NPT at all appropriate public meetings and functions, and makes effective public presentations.
· Establishes and maintains relationships with key individuals in both the public and private sectors. Works for strong communications with local elected officials and related nonprofit organizations.
· Represents NPT’s concerns to governmental agencies and other policy makers and funding entities.
Marketing, Communications and Public Relations
· Oversees the development of all promotional and communications strategies.
· Leads all public relations efforts and serves as NPT spokesperson.
Qualifications and Characteristics:
Education and Experience
· Bachelor's degree in disciplines related to business, public administration, communications, planning, and/or historic preservation. Advanced degree in historic preservation or related field preferred.
· Experience in nonprofit management, public relations, public administration, business, organizational development, and team-oriented cultures. Nonprofit leadership experience is preferred.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and strategic leader with an abiding commitment to and passion for NPT’s mission; an energetic and compelling public advocate; a knowledgeable and sophisticated thought leader; an astute manager of financial and human resources; and an inclusive and accessible partner to the board, staff, and community. The successful candidate will have a strong appreciation for historic preservation and architectural history; verifiable understanding of best practices in nonprofit management; and a proven ability to identify and develop sources of financial support for NPT’s strategic requirements and aspirations. The next Executive Director must have an affinity for working with a culturally and economically diverse community and an appreciation for living on Nantucket where the citizens are highly engaged, resilient, and passionate about their quality of life on island.
This is a full-time position with material benefits, and the salary will be commensurate with experience. In addition, NPT works closely and shares facilities during the summer months with the University of Florida’s Preservation Institute Nantucket (PIN).
