Invitation for Applications: Santa Fe Trail NextGen Council
The National Park Service (NPS) National Trails office invites applications for the Santa Fe Trail Next Generation (NextGen) Council.  The NextGen Council will help raise awareness of the trail, propose ways to tell a fuller story of the trail, and make recommendations for expanding and diversifying interest in the trail.  Through the program, Council members will gain professional experiences, learn about NPS career opportunities and the federal job application process, and complete a professional project. The Council is a 7-month virtual volunteer program.  The program will begin March 22, 2021 and end in late October 2021.

Members may be able to negotiate course credit with their university, but the NPS cannot guarantee university participation.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in training/workshops to further develop career skills.

The National Trails Office welcomes applicants with a variety of academic and professional backgrounds.  The position is especially applicable to people with an interest in history, heritage, National Parks, trails, parks and recreation, and JEDIA (justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility).

NextGen Council Members will:
  • Participate in five required virtual meetings
  • Explore methods for diversifying engagement and reaching young adults
  • Work as a team to complete a professional report
  • Present their report virtually to NPS and non-profit partner representatives
  • Engage with NPS employees and learn about NPS careers
  • Have opportunities to participate in career skill-building sessions and/or trainings

Applicants are required to:
  • Be between the ages of 18-28
  • Commit to volunteering 1-3 hours per week  for 7 months
  • Have internet access and the ability to complete virtual teamwork
  • Have strong communication and teamwork or collaboration skills
Application Process
To apply, visit the listing on volunteer.gov. There, you will be asked to provide information about your education, past volunteer experiences, the name of one academic or professional reference, and questions about why you want to participate in the Santa Fe Trail NextGen Council.  Applications are due March 1, 2021.
