This is an excellent opportunity to use your expertise in GIS to help SHPO organize and improve our mapping and records systems, learn the Section 106 review process, and help ensure the future for Missouri’s irreplaceable historic places.

What you’ll do:
Manage the SHPO Geographical Information System (GIS), the repository of known archaeological sites and surveys and other cultural resources in the state
Review submitted archaeological site forms and surveys then interpret and input the information into the GIS
Review existing GIS information, recommend improvements, and coordinate with ITSD to make required improvements and updates
Review federal undertakings subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (SOI Standards)
Evaluate the significance of archaeological resources and their eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
Comment on archaeological determinations of eligibility, review cultural resource reports, and other documentation in consultation with agencies and interested parties
Use ESRI ArcGIS tools to research, identify, and evaluate historic properties
Assist in preservation planning efforts by working with federal, state, and local agencies, private individuals, and community organizations
Respond to inquiries regarding the GIS, site locations, and project review

All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or closely related field and 2 years of archaeological experience. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education and experience).

Preferred Qualifications
Intermediate knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS tools, data management systems, and applications.
Basic knowledge of historic preservation programs funded by the Historic Preservation Fund and their corresponding laws, regulations, and prescriptive literature (i.e. NHPA, etc.)
An understanding of the SOI Treatment Standards and their application to Section 106 undertakings/consultation.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
