2023 Summer Internship
Greater Portland Landmarks seeks two (2) summer interns to provide support for our Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement Manager in Landmarks’ expanding neighborhood education and outreach activities and conducting reconnaissance level surveys in greater Portland, Maine. Interns will be exposed to many facets of a community-based historic preservation organization through surveys, advocacy, activities, and events. Our internship program will primarily focus on conducting field surveys and archival research to identify and interpret cultural properties in historic 19th and early 20th century neighborhoods outside of established historic districts. Interns will produce written and photographic documentation and complete data entry of survey information into the State’s on-line GIS based database.

Primary Duties
• Conduct Reconnaissance Level Survey of properties in Greater Portland according to Maine Historic Preservation Commission standards.
• Photograph historic resources with a digital camera.
• Create and maintain maps of surveyed resources.
• Enter field notes and photographs into Maine’s Cultural & Architectural Resource Management Archive (CARMA).
• Assist the Director of Advocacy with research for local historic district nominations.

Ancillary Duties
• Assist with planning and execution of various programming and events.
• Write articles for the Greater Portland Landmarks magazine, blog posts, and website posts as assigned.
• Opportunity to participate in a variety of preservation-related activities and community meetings.
• Assist Director of Advocacy in inspecting Landmarks’ preservation easement properties; documenting condition of these properties.

Supervision
• Position reports to Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement Manager.

Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a graduate program in historic preservation, urban planning, community development, American studies, American history or architectural history. Recent undergraduate college graduates will be considered but must have a very strong background in above areas and strong writing skills.
• Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and National Register of Historic Preservation nomination standards is highly beneficial.
• Applicant should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, the ability to participate successfully as member of team-based environment, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Solid office skills and use of Microsoft products (Office, Excel, Outlook, Power Point). Familiarity with InDesign and/or GIS is beneficial.
• Applicants should have excellent writing skills, be highly organized and efficient, and have an ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• A car is required in order to access distant neighborhoods. The applicant must be sufficiently mobile to travel up and down city blocks for several hours at a time and to climb stairs.
• Some familiarity with New England architecture is preferred but not required.

Honorarium: $5,000 for 10 weeks
Housing: Housing can be provided at the University of Maine dormitories on the Gorham campus (11 miles from the Greater Portland Landmarks office). Please indicate in your application if housing is needed.

Dates: June – August (10 weeks within those dates, some flexibility to accommodate college schedules)
