The Housing & Planning Department partners with the community to shape a more equitable Austin and to prevent the displacement of people and services, using planning disciplines and affordable housing resources. The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) is a Division in the Housing and Planning Department. HPO encourages the preservation of Austin’s historic buildings, structures, sites, and districts; promotes awareness of our cultural and architectural heritage; and helps shape a more sustainable, equitable, and livable city in collaboration with other City departments and community partners.
The Historic Preservation Office coordinates designation of historic landmarks and districts in Austin. The office coordinates review of applications for historic zoning with the Historic Landmark Commission, and Austin City Council makes final decisions on these designations. The HPO team reviews proposed work to locally designated historic properties, work within National Register historic districts, and demolition and relocation permits for historic-age properties.
