Spend Your Summer in Thousand Island Park: A Historic Resort Community on the St. Lawrence River


Employer: Thousand Island Park Corporation on behalf of the Thousand Island Park Landmark Society and the Thousand Island Park Preservation/Architectural Review Board.

Thousand Island Park (New York) began in 1875 as a Methodist Camp Meeting Association on Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River and later became the privately held corporation that exists today. TI Park has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982 and has recently had a re-application with updated information approved by the New York State Historic Preservation Office and the National Register.

The T I Park Landmark Society (a 501c3 corporation) and the Preservation/Review Board (which is appointed by the T I Park Corporation) are both dedicated to the protection and preservation of this unique community’s close to 400 late 19th and early 20th century residences, boathouses, and public buildings.  For more information visit www.thousandislandparklandmarksociety.com; and tiparkcorp.com

Thousand Island Park Landmark Society is the proud recipient of a 2020 New York State Historic Preservation Award.

Type: Internship opportunity to work with both the Landmark Society, which provides education and outreach focused on preservation, and the Preservation/Architectural Review Board, which deals with the historic architectural integrity of the community.

Compensation: This position is for six weeks from June 24th to August 5th, 2023.  The start and end dates can be negotiated to accommodate candidates’ academic year.  The compensation is $2,000. Hours are flexible and can vary from day to day, depending on the complexity and timing of the projects needing attention.

Housing: cottage owners provide room and board without cost to the intern.

Description:
The intern works with the Preservation/Architectural Review Board and the Landmark Society;

Attends Preservation/Architectural Review Board and Landmark Society meetings;
Assists with interface between Board, contractors, cottage owners, and the community;

Provides historic preservation information and resources to the public including information on the history and architecture of TI Park, books and documents on historic preservation and assistance with research on individual cottages and other Park buildings;

Assists with public education on historic preservation and architecture for all age groups, including children. This could include summer programs and exhibitions, presentations and lectures, walking tours and special or regular participatory events;

Assists Landmark Society and Preservation /Architectural Review Board with preservation duties, including archival maintenance;

Serves as docent one day a week (11:00 AM-2:00 PM) in the Landmark Society building;

Assists with grant writing (as needed and with supervision);

Develops and pursues self-initiated special projects, time permitting.

Experience the preservation field outside the classroom, including program development and implementation, public education, archival methods, research, preservation advocacy, events organization and community outreach;

Experience practical applications of new construction and rehabilitation and its impact on the local historic district;

Work with a variety of people involved in historic preservation: cottage owners, residents of all ages, visitors to TI Park, local contractors, preservation consultants, professionals, Preservation/ Architectural Review Board and Landmark Society supporters;

Gain practical knowledge of how historic communities manage the rules and regulations related to current building standards;

Experience the function of a not-for-profit organization and governance in a historic community.

The Thousand Island Park Landmark Society and the Preservation/Architectural Review Board seek a highly motivated person training in Historic Preservation. Interested candidates, graduate and undergraduate (Historic Preservation and/or Architectural History majors preferred) must submit a resume and a recommendation from a current professor by March 27th, 2023.
