The primary purpose of the USS NORTH CAROLINA Battleship Memorial is as the State of North Carolina's memorial to the veterans of World War II and most particularly to the more than 10,000 North Carolinians who died in that service and whose names are enshrined therein. Additionally, the Battleship is one of the leading attractions in southeastern North Carolina and a growing museum whose mission focus is on the ships named for the State of North Carolina. Uniquely, by statute, the Battleship Commission is an enterprise activity of the State of North Carolina that operates, maintains, and preserves the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA and is required to be self-sufficient for the ship's annual operation.

The Battleship
Battleship NORTH CAROLINA participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II, earning 15 battle stars. This authentically restored National Historic Landmark proudly serves as her State’s World War II Memorial to the 11,000+ North Carolinians who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Moored across from historic downtown Wilmington, the Battleship welcomes visitors daily. Plot your own course as you explore nine levels, climb inside gun turrets, marvel at early computers, and see where the crew ate, slept, and worked. Crew stories throughout the Ship introduce you to the 2,000 young men who called the Showboat home.

Over the decades, North Carolinians have contributed to campaigns that brought the USS North Carolina Battleship home, restored failing materials, and installed features to enhance the visitors’ experience. The vision for the Battleship continues and the ship will soon be display uplighting that will enhance the Battleship at night.  Other projects that are underway include Living with Water, an initiative to install wetlands to allow tides to ebb and flow and Battleship Park which will be a 2.5 acre riverside public park.

The Location | Wilmington, NC
USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial is in Wilmington, NC, a charming city with a premier location. With its vibrant waterfront and scenic Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River, Wilmington is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the south and prides itself on providing exceptional quality of life services for its citizens.  Its National Register Historic District spans more than 230 blocks and is joined by new features like a performing arts center, waterfront park and amphitheater, and an event pier. Wilmington is home to a state port, an international airport, and a regional teaching hospital (New Hanover Regional Medical Center). It is also home to the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College. The city enjoys a diverse and growing economy centered on education, healthcare, and tourism. In addition to the Battleship, nearby beaches, a state aquarium, and art museums offer unique opportunities to enjoy the area. This potent mix of assets has fueled a two decade mini-boom, and Wilmington’s population has grown to over 122,000 residents.
