Partners for Sacred Places is the only national, non-sectarian, non-profit organization devoted to helping congregations and their communities sustain and actively use older and historic sacred places. The Texas Office of Partners for Sacred Places has dedicated its 2009 funding and resources to assist congregations affected by Hurricane Ike in Galveston with building assessments and capital grants. Partners will fund up to 12 congregations with up to $300,000 as well as provide coaching, technical assistance, and workshops for all congregations in historic buildings impacted by the storm.

Churches and Synagogues have served as the cornerstone of the Galveston community by providing an array of services ranging from feeding programs to athletic organizations for youth. There are more than 50 churches and 2 synagogues representing every major religious denomination on the island. Staff from Partners for Sacred Places visited the island, toured these historical facilities and met with congregations to hear their stories. One pastor shared that she has been living in her car for two months. Another member cried as she began to talk about the changes in her church since the storm.

65 individuals representing more than 27 congregations attended our meeting on Monday, November 17 to learn more about the many ways in which we will support their efforts. In order to help fulfill the vision of these congregations, PSP is also seeking architects who can assist in rebuilding these congregations by providing building assessments. These historic churches are assets to the community and without support, they are unable to be effective and continue their legacy of making an impact.
