New Legislation Introduced to Establish Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Park

From Preservation Action:

Legislation was introduced last week in the House and Senate to establish a Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park. The Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park Act (H.R. 9691, S. 5122), led by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) in the Senate and Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL) in the House, would help commemorate and preserve the legacy of American businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and his work with Booker T. Washington to establish Rosenwald schools throughout the segregated South.

This legislation follows the completion of a special resource study from the National Park Service that supported the preservation of sites associated with Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools.

The Senate bill would enable the preservation of the San Domingo School in Sharptown, MD and provide for the acquisition of land on or near the site of Sears Merchandising Complex in Chicago, IL to establish a headquarters and visitor center. The bill would also establish a Network of Rosenwald Schools to be associated with the Park. While the House bill also identifies the St. George Rosenwald School in St. George, SC in addition to the San Domingo School for immediate inclusion in the National Historical Park. The bills would also direct the Department of Interior to include interpretation of Julius Rosenwald at two existing National Park sites.

This is an exciting step in the years-long effort, led by the Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Park Campaign, to permanently preserve the legacy and sites of Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools. We encourage you to reach out to your members of Congress and urge them to sign-on to this important bill!
