Poplar Forest is Going to the Dogs

November 3, 2018

On Saturday, November 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., patriotic pups and their humans, dog lovers and history buffs are invited to join Poplar Forest for a tail waggin’ good time at the first Colonial Canine Celebration. The event, which is free and open to the public, marks the dedication and ribbon-cutting of the historic home’s new Jeffersonian-inspired dog kennel and the release of its new children’s book, Colonial Klaus in Thomas Jefferson’s House.

Join Thomas Jefferson, as portrayed by actor Bill Barker, and the real Colonial Klaus, a black-and-tan longhaired dachshund, for a pet-centered day beginning with a ribbon-cutting and the dedication of the new kennel for visiting pups. Enter your dog in the costumed dog parade and competition at 1:00 p.m. for a chance to win the title of Poplar Forest’s Best Dressed pooch—costume themes are limited only by your imagination. Be among the first to obtain a copy of Colonial Klaus in Thomas Jefferson’s House, have it signed by author Laura Macaluso and meet Klaus; and pair your first edition with a new Colonial Klaus children’s t-shirt. Lead your children on a fun-filled adventure through the grounds of Poplar Forest using the new Colonial Klaus exploration map for kids as your guide. And for those in search of a new pet pal, the Lynchburg Humane Society will offer pet adoptions on site. Tour Jefferson’s beloved villa at a reduced rate ($10) during the Colonial Canine Celebration.

The beautifully told and illustrated children’s tale Colonial Klaus in Thomas Jefferson’s House, written by Laura Macaluso and illustrated by Lynden Godsoe for Poplar Forest, takes the reader on an exciting adventure back in time, with modern-day pooch Klaus as their guide. The tale follows Klaus as he explores the plantation, meets Thomas Jefferson and his granddaughters Cornelia and Ellen and gets to know many of the enslaved African Americans including Hannah Hubbard, her son Billy and Burwell Colbert, all of whom labored on the plantation and made Jefferson’s lifestyle possible. The fundraising effort to complete the design, production and printing of the book was supported by a generous grant from the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists and individual donations. The first edition of Colonial Klaus in Thomas Jefferson’s House is available exclusively at the Poplar Forest Museum Shop.

Designed by Travis McDonald, Poplar Forest’s director of architectural restoration, the new Jeffersonian-inspired dog kennel will provide a comfortable place for the hundreds of dogs that visit the site each year to wait while their humans tour Jefferson’s octagonal villa. Leashed dogs are welcome to explore the plantation grounds but are not allowed inside the house. Inspired by classical Greek and Roman Ionic order columns, McDonald created bone-topped columns to add a canine-centric twist to the structure that can accommodate up to three pups at a time. The fundraising effort to complete the design and construction of the kennel was supported by individual donations.
