Traditional Healing Workshop

January 26, 2019
Traditional Healing Workshop
Learn about indigenous Mexican and Mexican American traditional medicine with Elisa Marina Alvarado, Saturday, January 26th, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Los Altos History Museum. The workshop will cover basic indigenous concepts about health and healing, and include activities to experience a few of the practices of medicina tradicional. Cost is $20 and includes lunch.

Elisa will facilitate a plant medicine meditation and will teach techniques that participants can include in their own health plan for 2019, including the making of a medicine bundle. The workshop will also include a presentation of herbal remedies Juana Briones would have used to heal common health issues, taught by Museum docent Marilyn Henderson, a certified homeopath.

Elisa Marina Alvarado's education of medicinal plants began with her grandmother who grew plants used for the family's wellness. In the 1980's, she learned healing techniques from the Apache healer, Cristina Lopez, and later conducted forms of spiritual intervention under the guidance of Zapotecan elder, Doña Enriqueta Contreras. Elisa is active in social justice and cultural recovery initiatives of the American Indian and Chicano/Mexicano communities of San Jose, and is a health therapist with the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley.

The workshop is in support of the Museum's exhibition "Inspired by
Juana: La Doña de la Frontera" running through March 31, 2019. Space for the workshop is limited, RSVPs required at http://losaltoshistory.org/events/traditionalhealing-workshop
