Building Arts Workshop - Lime Mortar Conservation Hands-On Techniques for Everyone

April 6-7, 2019

What began as a grassroots movement in 1995 became a stunning architectural concept in 2008. After years of archaeology, engineering, and design, construction began on the Glass House Project in 2015.

The project continues to be recognized as an example of visionary thinking that sets Menokin apart as a leader in interpreting and preserving history.

This rehabilitation strategy blends historic fabric with modern materials, recreating Menokin as a memory of its former self, and provides visitors an opportunity to experience the structure in a new and revealing way.

Glass was deliberately chosen to enable us to tell the important stories of the people  who lived, worked and died at Menokin and their intimate relationship with the land and buildings. By highlighting the exposed structural bones of the house — normally
hidden from view — we offer a rare opportunity to make personal connections with a piece of American history, and those that labored to create it.

Without the traditional barriers of finished surfaces, fingerprints are visible in the handmade bricks; evidence of chisels and hand tools are etched in the timbers and paneling.

Menokin is uniquely positioned to provide unparalleled exposure and experiences for those professionals and amateurs with an affinity for the Building Arts. Our programming incorporates the intrinsic value of the popular Makers Movement with a focus on the traditional materials and techniques used in the construction of 18th-century plantation homes and vernacular structures.

Our Building Arts Workshop for 2019 is a timeless favorite: Lime Mortar Conservation and Application. This two-day workshop will provide instruction in the science of historic lime mortar, as well as hand's on techniques of mixing, applying and expertly executing mortar on lath and with brick.

Registration is now open for this workshop and the class size is limited to 20. Details about the course schedule, associated costs and instructor bios are included on the flyer that can be found at this link. Feel free to email us with questions.
