Our Town, Our Schools, Their Words
June 8, 2019 |
The program begins at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Using annual reports from Nashua during the 1840’s-1850’s, Susan Fineman will examine how town fathers addressed public education in their one-room schools. These chroniclers were prolific writers who made VERY candid observations on the state of their eleven schools and never minced words! They both praise and critique teachers, scholars and parents! They discuss in detail, the progress and deficiencies in teaching methods, materials and discipline. They write about the conditions in the schools and chastise the public for their lack of support on countless issues. Come to find out how, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” This is an entertaining and visual presentation with fascinating handouts!
