Crash Course in American Architectural History I - 19th Century

Love old buildings but have no idea what you're looking at? In this class, we'll give you the rundown of American architectural styles from the Colonial era through the 19th century, with a focus on local and regional examples. Learn the names of important architectural styles common in the northeast; some basic architectural terminology; and how to approximately date the buildings you see every day. This class can be taken on its own if you’re not a fan of mid-century modern architecture or you can continue the fun with Crash Course in American Architectural History II – 20th Century.
Age:
This class is appropriate for all ages, although anyone under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
Parking Info: After 5pm, all general, reserved, and visitor parking spots are open to the public in Lot E and Lot F. Park and walk through the breezeway to the right of the large orange MAGIC building, taking the doors to the right into Booth Hall. University Gallery is at the end of the hallway.
About the teachers:
Caitlin Meives is a proud (and nerdy) preservationist who owns an early 20th century home in the Park Ave neighborhood. She is the Preservation Planner on staff at The Landmark Society of Western New York, a regional non-profit preservation organization and the co-founder of The Landmark Society’s Young Urban Preservationists (YUPs). She received her Masters of Science in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont. Follow along with her preservation adventures @catameives.
Christopher Brandt is a native Rochesterian, avid local history buff, and obsessive owner of the Democrat and Chronicle Master Model Home of 1928. He is an architect at Bero Architecture PLLC who in his spare time serves as a member of the Young Urban Preservationists (YUPs), Town of Irondequoit Preservation Commission, Historic Brighton, and several Landmark Society volunteer committees.
