Literary Lights of the UWS
November 10, 2020 |
Dorothy Parker said: “New York is always hopeful.” Isaac Bashevis Singer called the city “something of a marvel” and pronounced it “flawed, but touched by greatness.” Nora Ephronmused that it was “the most exciting, magical, fraught-with-possibility place that you could ever live in” and Jack Kerouac wondered, “Have they got a Times Square on Mars?” These are just four of the scores of writers who have lived, worked, or set literature on the Upper West Side. Others icons include James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth and Saul Bellow--but there are so many more! Grab your notebook and join in Lucie Levine's unique literary tour of the Upper West Side exploring these writers’ works and their Upper West Side worlds.
Join LW! for a new spin on "writer's block"! We'll (virtually) wander the streets of our local authors, poets, and even a few characters more famous than their creators. Come along as we duck into local literary haunts of the present and past and discover a new view of our neighborhood on and off the page.
