Preserving Affordability:Using Historic Preservation to Develop & Maintain Affordable Housing in NYC

March 22, 2023

Everyone agrees that New York City is facing an affordable housing crisis. Adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of historic buildings has in many cases proven to be an effective way to preserve both affordability and built fabric. What are the policies, strategies, and funding opportunities available to achieve this beneficial “double bottom line”? This half-day symposium for developers, architects, and other housing and preservation practitioners, will take an in-depth look at successful examples where historic buildings have been rehabilitated for new affordable housing.

Presenters will focus on recent case studies in New York City and walk attendees through how these successful projects happened. Additional presentations will dive into technical aspects of rehab and adaptive reuse projects, from using historic rehabilitation tax credits in conjunction with affordable housing credits, an explanation of RAD/PACT for these projects, and how to assess historic significance and confirm eligibility for financial incentives. The final panel will feature experts from New York City and beyond discussing how we can encourage more of this work and change the narrative so historic rehabilitation is more frequently seen as an appealing and feasible solution.

Fee: $75 general, $65 for individuals affiliated with co-sponsoring organizations

Continuing Education credits for architects will be available
