Property History
Asa King constructed the house on the site of a former tanyard, between 1810 and 1812 for Eli Smallwood, a prosperous merchant, shipper and planter. Gardens were designed by Morley Williams, the landscape architect for New Bern's historic Tryon Palace and for Mount Vernon. Above the 6 paneled door is a fanlight, rectangular transom of the most delicate & best preserved in New Bern with carved medallions depict a draped female. The living room and its windows have the original wooden shutters, hardware & doors.

Property Description
The Eli Smallwood home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is an elegant Federal-era home built in 1810 that is steeped with history & rich in tradition offering Federal architecture at its finest. This showpiece is waterfront on the Neuse River w/ stunning gardens of lawns & hedges patterned into geometric shapes, designed by Morley Williams, the landscape architect for New Bern’s Tryon Palace. Throughout the home you will be in awe of the intricate woodwork done by early 19th century craftsman & the original wood doors. Situated on 0.894 acres w/boat dock & lift, this imposing residence has 5 bedrooms, 4 full baths, 7 fireplaces, hardwood floors throughout, grand central hallways, 9 ft ceilings & many more fine architectural details.
