Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, and will be located at 1659 E. Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101

This position assists several programs within the SHPO, with a focus on the National Register and Section 106 programs. What you’ll do:
  • Assure compliance with state and federal preservation laws and regulations related to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Federal Part 1 historic tax credit applications, and Section 110 & 106.
  • Act as the gatekeeper for incoming Eligibility Assessments (EA), which includes processing EA requests, collecting staff comments, and serving as the official respondent.
  • Process nominations for eligible cultural resources to the NRHP; evaluate identified resources, assess eligibility and provide recommendations. Prepare for and participate in Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation meetings.
  • Review and process Section 106 projects.
  • Contribute to Missouri’s architectural survey program by identifying and evaluating historic properties across the state to further develop the architectural survey program.
  • Support community outreach efforts through development, preparation, and presentation of preservation educational materials. Perform occasional site visits to assess eligibility of resources and provide guidance on other preservation-related activities.
  • Provide occasional coverage of other programs as needed, including monitoring state-held easements and covenants.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or closely related field and one year of professional experience involving historic preservation, cultural resources management, or similar work. (Other approved education or experience may be considered as a substitute for the required education or experience.)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong writing skills and communication skills
  • Ability to successfully collaborate with others Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and maintaining electronic records and databases.
  • Duties will be performed with independence, judgment, and initiative within established guidelines.
  • Knowledge of architectural styles and types
  • Experience conducting architectural surveys
  • Ability to conduct research and plan preservation activities
  • Experience reviewing and/or preparing Section 106 submittals
  • Experience editing and commenting on preservation-related documents
  • Experience applying criteria, determining eligibility, and writing National Register nominations
  • GIS experience
