West Virginia was part of Virginia until the Civil War. This Panhandle is located along both the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, so quite a few large homes were built here. We were on the winning side, so many of them escaped destruction during the war.

According a Tax Foundation study, West Virginia has the 2nd overall lowest cost of living of any State. This makes it a great area for Retirees. We also get quite a few “Property Tax Refugees” from Maryland, Va and Pa.
