Property History

Constructed in 1882, South Martin Church is unusual in that it was built to house both Methodist and United Brethren congregations: the two denominations sometimes met jointly and sometimes offered services on alternating Sundays. Although the Methodists disbanded in 1908, the United Brethren congregation continued to meet here until 1948. Historic photos show that the steeple was originally taller but was shortened following a lightning strike and later storm damage.
