Assistant Carpenter

Position Type: Full Time, Hourly

Department: Preservation and Facilities

Reports to: Director of Preservation and Facilities and Lead Carpenter

Salary range: $23.00 - $25.00 DOE

The Assistant Carpenter uses developed skills to perform a variety of maintenance, construction carpentry, and woodworking projects throughout the Museum. Projects may include temporary work, such as exhibition spaces, as well as permanent repairs to historic buildings. The Assistant Carpenter will perform skilled tasks to support the conservation and repair of Shelburne Museum’s 40 historic buildings, many of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Essential Job Functions:

• Assist with the completion of basic carpentry tasks such as framing, roofing, siding, flooring, cabinetry, window and door construction, and water, pest, and rot damage remediation.
• Perform shop-based work, including custom construction of displays and other woodworking projects.
• Assist with the annual opening and closing of exhibit spaces and buildings.
• Assist the department with manual tasks such as snow removal, erecting tents for special events, and installing and removing air conditioners.
• Complete maintenance requests from all departments and assist in prioritizing carpentry projects to ensure timely completion.
• 25% - 40% of time will be devoted to tasks on the Ticonderoga, based on department needs and the applicant’s interest.
• Other duties as assigned.

• None

Qualifications:

• A minimum of 2 years of carpentry experience is preferred, but a strong appreciation for historic preservation is essential.
• Familiarity with framing repairs using period joinery, wood roofing, and other historic trades (e.g., masonry, plastering, metalworking, slate work) is a plus.
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
• Skilled in the use of carpentry equipment with strong adherence to safety and security guidelines.
• Creative, detail-oriented, versatile, and able to work collaboratively across departments.
• Experience working carefully in historic structures and gallery spaces is a plus.
• AutoCAD experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Climb ladders, bend, kneel, perform repetitive motions, and work in confined spaces.
• Work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks such as snow removal and heavy lifting.

Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday – Friday

Terms: The Assistant Carpenter position is a full-time, full-benefits, hourly, non-exempt, employment-at-will position.
