The Role
The Historic Mobile Preservation Society is seeking a strategic and community-minded Director to lead the Historic Oakleigh House Museum. This role is responsible for the professional administration of the site, ensuring high standards of preservation, education, and financial health. The Director will manage a small team and work closely with the HMPS Board to elevate the museum’s profile within the region.
Key Responsibilities
• Grant Writing & Financial Growth: Identify, draft, and manage grant proposals to support operations and capital projects. Oversee annual fundraising goals and sponsorship opportunities.
• Personnel Supervision: Direct and support one part-time Museum Specialist and a core team of volunteer docents. Facilitate training programs centered on historical accuracy and visitor engagement.
• Site Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the historic house and its collections, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.
• Program Development: Develop educational programming and tours that align with the museum’s mission and reach diverse audiences.
Schedule & Requirements
• Standard Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
• Occasional Work: Ability to work occasional Sundays for special events and community programs as needed.
Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Education, Public History, or a closely related field.
• Experience: 3–5 years of professional experience in historical site management, museum administration, or non-profit leadership.
• Skills: Proven success in grant writing and fundraising. Strong organizational leadership and the ability to manage both professional staff and volunteer teams.
• Attributes: Excellent public speaking skills and a passion for the preservation of historic architecture and Gulf Coast history.
