For over 40 years, Boston Preservation Alliance has recognized people and projects that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to preserving Boston’s historic character. We are thrilled to announce the winners of Boston Preservation Alliance's 38th Preservation Achievement Awards.

St. Luke’s Chapel
St. Luke’s Chapel, located in Roxbury, was built in 1901 and is the neighborhood’s only structure designed by celebrated architect Ralph Adams Cram. The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, Historic Boston, Inc. and Spencer Preservation Group restored the chapel inside and out, and reactivated it as a functional and inspiring community resource.

Memorial Hall: Abraham Lincoln Post 11
Memorial Hall, located in Charlestown, is a 235-year-old structure that has served its community without interruption. After ten years of sustained effort by the Charlestown Preservation Society, it is now restored using authentic and historically informed restoration techniques by Spencer Preservation Group, the North Bennet Street School, Finch & Rose, and A.M. Design & Fabrication.

Boston Athenaeum
Boston Athenaeum, located in Beacon Hill, conducted a revision and expansion prompted by a growing need for multipurpose, flexible space. Annum Architects rose to the challenge of designing 19,000 SF of space in an adjacent building while creating an aesthetic harmony, cohesively blending the old and the new.

Fens Gatehouse
Fens Gatehouse, located in Back Bay, was designed by Hiram A. Miller in 1909 to house water flow control mechanisms. Finegold Alexander Architects spent five years restoring it into the Department of Conservation & Recreation Flood Control Operations’ office, allowing the gatehouse to continue its legacy of protecting the city’s waterways in a new way.

American Ancestors
American Ancestors, located in Back Bay, has reimagined their public presence by integrating their neighboring building– just 16 feet wide–into the new Family Heritage Experience building. Schwartz/Silver Architects and Shawmut Design & Construction Company’s work results in a welcoming entrance that seamlessly connects to retail facades of the street; as well as visitor and education spaces, programming and lecture facilities, and public research and outreach areas.

Dorchester Heights
Dorchester Heights, located in South Boston, was designed by Peabody & Stearns and marks the site of the 1776 Evacuation of Boston. National Parks of Boston, Stantec, SmithGroup, and Building Conservation Associates led a full restoration of the monument and its surrounding landscape. An iconic symbol of Boston’s Revolutionary heritage is now renewed as a cherished, active, and inspiring public place.
