Demolition of Providence’s Former Rialto Theatre Begins Under Emergency Approval
Demolition has begun on the former Rialto Theatre at 119-127 Mathewson Street in downtown Providence, a building nearly two centuries old. The property, owned by Paolino Properties since 2019, was fast-tracked under a city ordinance allowing emergency demolition of buildings judged an imminent hazard to public safety, after approval from the City late last month. Owner and former mayor Joseph Paolino Jr. told the Providence Post the site will be sold and turned into a parking lot.
Reporting by the Providence Preservation Society’s Providence Post notes that the committee that recommended demolition included an engineer paid by Paolino. The full story is on the PPS website.
