Historic Kansas City Releases 2026 Most Endangered Places List
Historic Kansas City has released its 2026 Most Endangered Places List, the first full revision of the program since 2021. The list names 17 individual properties and three building types threatened by demolition, prolonged vacancy, deferred maintenance and development pressure, drawing on nominations from 11 neighborhood and community organizations. Historic apartment buildings that provide comparatively affordable housing, especially in the Historic Northeast, are strongly represented.
Listed properties include the former Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City (925 Grand Boulevard), the Palace Clothing Company Building, the Belmont Hotel, Bryant School, the Swope Park concession and first aid buildings, The Colonnade and several other Benton Boulevard apartment buildings, the Kansas City Call Building at 1715 East 18th Street, and the 1872 Merriam School and a former Christian Science church in Merriam, Kansas. The thematic listings cover colonnaded apartment buildings, bungalow neighborhoods, and historic neighborhood corner stores and groceries.
Historic Kansas City also keeps a watch list and welcomes information about other threatened places at hkcf@historickansascity.org.
